When the cartilage of the joint begins to breakdown (typically found in older people). Cartilage in the temporomandibular joint is not as strong as the cartilage in other joints, therefore more prone to breakdown. A good indicator of osteoarthritis of the TMJ is a creaking sound as a person opens their mouth. The creaking sound is often called, crepitus.
