Gary Bowen's Elbow Rehabilitation
Transcript:
Announcer: Get ready to be inspired and hear the story of Gary Bowen, who had no use of his left arm but couldn't let the music go on without him.Gary: My name is Gary Bowen. I was born with my left arm being pulled off, breaking my shoulder and elbow. Then five or six years ago, I over-exerted myself and it caused damage to my left elbow; which, in turn, caused complete non-use of my left arm. If you imagine taking your hand and flex it in and out with your fingers to make a fist, I had lost that nerve condition to do that. I was a drummer since 12 years old. People were amazed that I could even do that with my birth injury.
Imagine having to give up your favorite hobby and it was pretty traumatic to have to give that up because I couldn't hold the sticks anymore; the stick would just fall from my hand. My mind said I had it, but my hand didn't.
Then I got referred to Coast Therapy. I started telling the therapist that they should have a device that I could use that's non-evasive, I can bend my arm with it. So I drew a picture of what I thought it should look like and then about three days later he called me and said, "You're not going to believe who walked in my office with what you drew three days ago." And in walked Peg Lewino your representative.
Peggy: When I first met Gary Bowen, December 23, he had a contracture of lacking 25 degrees of elbow extension and here we are just three and a half months later and now he's only lacking six degrees actively and passively ten degrees to zero.
Gary: Peg said I would never get to a five setting. Almost three months later I am up to a five and I'm getting ready to graduate into a five and a half pressure. They can stretch my arm now, completely on a table now. I can't do it myself but the therapist can get it actually straightened out. He's amazed that in the three months that the range of motion has taken its course. So with the Dynasplint, I'm actually, in three months, have made an excellent improvement.
Peggy: Gary is just another success story. He is a very happy patient and happy to share his story with anybody he comes in touch with.
